Rainwater harvesting is the process of collecting rain, storing it, and re-using it for household use. The scale of such systems vary greatly from simple water butts connected to a down pipe from guttering, where what is stored is used to water a garden, to large tanks, filters and pumps which can be used towards, washing machines, toilets, showers and baths.
These larger systems can be subdivided into two types; header tank systems and direct pump systems. Header tank systems require a tank to be installed in the loft; they are highly reliable, can switch to mains supply if there is little rainwater and have inexpensive and simple control systems.
Alternatively, direct pump systems, which are more prevalent, generate a better water pressure than header tank systems, enough for washing machines, car wash equipment and garden hoses.
