Air source heat pumps absorb energy from the outside air which is converted into heat to be used for radiators, underfloor or warm air heating systems and hot water.
Similar to fridges which extract heat from its inside, an air source heat pump extracts external heat, even when the temperature is as low as -15° C. While heat pumps do require electricity to run, the heat they extract from the ground, air, or water is renewed naturally.
Heat pumps deliver heat at low temperatures but over much longer periods, so would need to stay on permanently throughout the winter months in order to maintain a constant heat. Users can expect cost savings, the scale of which would depend on a number of factors including the type of heat distribution system, current fuel costs, efficiency of the old system, whether the system is being used to heat water and effective use of the system’s controls.
